First of all, are they for you? Would you be better off with a modular sofa even if there is sufficient space in your home for the traditional type of sofa?

Modular sofas come in different shapes and numbers of seating units and thus can be used in any shape or size of room and can be made to fit even awkward spaces. You just need to have a look around to see what's available.

Modular sofas can take up a fair bit of space as they may be wider than a traditional one but that means they can look very impressive in a large room. If you have a large open plan space such as a warehouse or loft conversion apartment they will look good and can be used to define spaces within the larger area.

Although, having said that, because of their versatility , being able to be split up, or placed at various angles, they may in fact be your best or even your only option if you have a small place such as a Victorian style London apartment.

If you are looking to get the maximum seating space you should also consider modular sofas. They are extremely functional and, often better value than the traditional type.

The modular type of sofa is available in a whole range of sizes and configurations. Small sofas are perhaps interesting in that they would be a comfy armchair for one person whilst being fit for a couple to cuddle in. Bear in mind though that the arms of a sofa will affect the seating capacity.

A word of caution though. Modern, chic, low-backed styles can look great, especially in a low-ceilinged room but they may not give good back support and therefore not be comfortable for some. You need to try before you buy.

Another point to keep in mind is that the over all appearance of furniture can depend on the size and shape of the arms. Narrow arms can make an entire sofa look smaller and more elegant, whilst large or bulky ones will do the opposite. Thus a large sofa with narrow arms might not look too big in a smallish room, but might not look as good as a sofa with big arms in a large room. In the latter case the sofa could make more of an impact with bigger arms. Some of these modular sofas these days have no arms at all and, whilst these can look minimalist and fashionable they are not always practical as a person seated at the end has nowhere to rest their arm.

If you don't have a long enough wall or space for an adequately large sofa consider instead a modular corner sofa. These usually sit along two walls with a section that allows it to turn the corner rather than be broken into two separate sections. This can give a nice integrated and grand appearance in a large enough room, whilst giving a lot of seating space. If your room is smaller, a similar effect can be achieved by using smaller units and/or less of the individual units.

If you are limited for space or want double duty from your sofa, then a sofa bed might be an option. Sofa beds usually extend or open up to form a proper bed when required, but at other times have the appearance of a normal sofa.

When thinking about the seating arrangements for a room it is as well to consider what functions are required and whether or not the seating needs to be flexible. If so then you might want to consider a sofa and some chairs rather than one large extended sofa unless this is flexible enough to allow for some rearrangement of the units.

A little careful thought and planning with these considerations in mind will ensure you get the perfect modular sofa for your home.

I love modular sofas that contain at least six pieces plus an armless chase.

the problem is they are extremely hard to find. I am looking for the small sizes to fit a small space.

I like a high seating area.
I have seen a few with attached backs and cushions, but I am not sure about sustained workmanship.
